The COST of Carrying Extra Weight: I use to weigh 260 pounds!

What is the emotional, mental, spiritual, physical and psychological cost of carrying extra weight around?

We know that there are numerous health concerns when you have carried extra weight for an extended period of time.  From heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure to sleep apnea autoimmune disease and those oh so famous, “we really don’t know what’s wrong with you”,  statements from our doctors, that we don’t want to hear.

First of all extra weight equals INFLAMMATION.  Inflammation is one of  the root causes of all diseases.  So if you are overweight, even by just 15 or 20 pounds you are carrying inflammation in the body.  This needs to be addressed today.  You do not have time to wait.  The longer you wait, the risk for disease increases.  Take it from me, reversing a condition once you have it is almost impossible. But it can be done!  I have been successful at reversing one of my autoimmune conditions, Hashimoto’s, but I would rather have not had this challenge.

So you may ask, “what causes inflammation in the body”? This is where you have to do your homework and use yourself as a guinea pig.  MANY cases of inflammation though are UNSEEN.  Meaning you can be of a perfect weight and still have large amounts of inflammation going on in the body.  We know this is true because of the cases where the man or woman is in top physical health and they drop dead while out jogging one day.  Or the athlete who is in perfect health (or so they thought) and they get diagnosed with heart disease or cancer.  These people have unseen inflammation going on and probably had it for years before something manifested big enough to take notice.

With my clients, we start with the basics.  We remove my top 7 inflammatory foods  from the diet over time.  These foods have scientific proof that they cause inflammation in ALMOST everyone. So we begin by removing one at a time over a 7 or 14 week period.  Here they are:

1. Gluten (in all forms)
2. Grains (in all forms)
3. Red Meat
4. Alcohol
5. Sugar
6. Dairy (in all forms)
7.Caffeine ( in all forms, and actually caffeine is on the list because it is an ENERGY ROBBER).

You are going to lose weight when you remove these items from your diet and your lifestyle.  We start out strict for two reasons.  To clean up the body AND to retrain the brain and your ego.  Later you are able to add some of these things back in, on occasion, but they will never become an everyday item.  And after you clean up the system you won’t want these things in your diet.  Clients tell me over and over again, they just don’t feel good eating these foods anymore.  This is a WIN for your health, but you have to be willing to make a loving commitment to yourself to do what needs to be done.

So what is the COST on the rest of the body?  Extra weight, being carried around day after day, after day, after day, is simply an energetic drain on the body, mind, and spirit.  The amount of time spent THINKING about your extra weight is enormous.  It feeds into negative self-talk.  It feeds into becoming lazy.  It feeds into not wanting to do your best because of the story you tell yourself around the weight.  It leads to failed relationships not only with others but with yourself. It is quite simply the biggest drain on your energy supply each and every day.  It costs you BIG TIME mentally, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.  You must stop this energy drain.  Each represents its own energy leak.  Plugging the holes are your job.

Begin with the physical and the rest will follow.  Get help to design a plan you can stick to from someone like me or someone in your community, life coach, therapist, personal trainer…they all should be able to help you come up with a plan that is tailored to you and your unique lifestyle.

My personal weight loss journey began back in 2000 when I weighed 260 pounds.  I think I weighed that for a long time before 2000. I only know that because I am a person who journals almost daily and I happened to find an old journal that had that weight written in it. And so the weight was an issue for a long time.  My weight was due to unfelt emotions. Or stuck emotions. I got married and weighed 123 pounds on my wedding day.  I’m 5’1 and so ballooning up to 260 pounds was creating absolute hell on my body, my mind and my spirit, my life, my relationship with my husband and my kids.  I hated my life. I was never a yo-yo person.  When I decided to lose the weight I did. Gradually over several years.  I now weigh 150 pounds and have kept it off for over 3 years.  I am a new person today.  I think differently, and I think clarity of mind comes when you decide to stop putting processed food in a living body. When you eat processed or packaged food you FEEL packaged and processed.  I behave differently.  I plan differently.  Today I can honestly say I love my life and I don’t spend a lot of energy thinking about my weight.
